Peter Murray, Chief Information Officer and Vice President for CITS

Dr. Peter J. Murray, Chief Information Officer and Vice President‌‌

Dr. Murray began his tenure at UMB on Jan. 14, 2002. He oversees the Center for Information Technology Services (CITS). CITS is the central information technology organization for the University that develops and maintains mission-critical enterprise systems and technologies, e.g., human resources, payroll, finance, student, email, research, teaching and learning, network infrastructure, web, and telecommunications. Dr. Murray also is responsible for overseeing and coordinating campuswide information technology, including policies, committees, and the overall strategy for the University.

Dr. Murray has raised the standard for information technology collaboration, support, efficiency, and security. He is a past chair of the Higher Education Information Security Council for EDUCAUSE and has introduced many state-of-the-art security best practices to safeguard UMB data and systems.

Dr. Murray has a bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College and a Master of Science degree from SUNY Plattsburgh. He also earned a Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) and a PhD degree, both from the University at Albany, SUNY.
 Fred Smith, Assistant and Information Security Officer - Information Security

Fred Smith, Assistant Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer

Mr. Smith’s responsibilities include strengthening the security for all University-owned systems, with additional consideration for those systems that have access to sensitive data, monitor industry trends, investigate, locate, and mitigate IT security vulnerabilities, and ensure campus compliance with state and University System of Maryland audit and data security regulations. Mr. Smith started with the University in November 1985. He has a master's degree in cybersecurity and a Bachelor of Science degree in information systems. He also earned his CISSP in May 2011.

 Vicky Hunter, Assistant Vice President for Infrastructure Services

Vicky Hunter, Assistant Vice President - Infrastructure Services

Ms. Hunter is responsible for the management of the central computing data centers and infrastructure (i.e., servers, desktops, database management, and computer operations) for the campus enterprise computerized services. Ms. Hunter provides ongoing strategy and leadership for acquiring, maintaining, and optimizing the technical infrastructure required to support the needs of the campus. She has 20-plus years of information technology (IT) experience. She is a graduate of University of Maryland University College with a Bachelor of Science degree in information systems management and a Master of Science degree in information technology, specializing in database administration.

Dr. Brian Coats, Assistant Vice President - Technology Operations and Planning

Dr. Coats' leadership responsibilities include project management, identity management and system integration, web applications and development, information technology training, information technology user support, software licensing, and communications. During his tenure with UMB that started in 2004, he has introduced and led many critical IT projects, including: the UMID, the myUMB Portal, Single Sign-On, Multi-Factor Authentication, the Community System, UMB Alerts, and Service Desk. He holds a Doctor of Science degree in applied information technology, a Master of Science degree in information technology, an advanced Graduate Certificate in information technology, and a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering.

 Zia Mafaher, Assistant Vice President for Networks and Communication Systems

Zia Mafaher, Assistant Vice President - Networks and Communication Systems

Mr. Mafaher provides direction, leadership, and management for the Networking and Communications team. Mr. Mafaher earned a bachelor's degree in management at College of Mass Communication in Iran, a master's degree in management at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, and a master's degree in engineering at Catholic University of America. He joined UMB in August 2013 with more than two decades of technology management experience in higher education. Before joining UMB, he worked at Catholic University of America and Georgetown.
