The Lyft On-Demand Shuttle discount program will end at 11:59 p.m. on July 30, 2021. After that time, discounts on rides between shuttle stops will no longer apply. The UMB shuttle will resume service Aug. 2, 2021, from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Lyft is the official rideshare partner for the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

UMB has launched an on-demand ride programs with Lyft, available to all current UMB students, faculty, and staff:

Lyft Ride Smart at UMB

$5 off up to 3 rides per month
Rides within campus
Rides must start and end in the service area
Available 24 hours a day

This program is intended to better serve the UMB community with affordable on-demand options, given that the Safe Ride programs was suspended due to COVID-19.

All currently enrolled students and active faculty and staff can opt-in and participate in this program. See program page linked above for more details.

How to Sign Up


Lyft Ride Smart

All currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff have received an email invitation at their official UMB email account from Lyft Business to activate the Lyft Ride Smart program. Open this emails and follow the prompts to opt-in to the program to receive your discounted rides.

Your discounts will then automatically be applied to your account within the Lyft app (in the "Promos" section) to rides which meet the program's eligibility criteria

Additional Program Information


  • If you request a ride that doesn’t meet the criteria, you will not see the discount shown on your ride confirmation screen and you will pay out of pocket. Lyft will not provide refunds for rides that take place outside of the geofence parameters.
  • Prices may be impacted by distance, traffic, time of day, special events and prime time surcharges.
  • If you see an expiration date of the last day of the current month listed in your Lyft app, don’t worry – the program discount is automatically re-applied on the first day of each month, so the last day of the current month will always show as an expiration date but won’t affect your ability to receive discounted rides.

Tips For Riding Smart with Lyft


  • Verify your ride by making sure the license plate number, driver information, and car make and model match what you see in the app.
  • Share your location and route with a friend or loved one from within the Lyft app so they can follow your ride in real time.
  • Follow the Lyft vehicle on GPS via the app.
  • Ask the driver to say who they are picking up.
  • After your ride ends, make sure your payment method reflects the discount to ensure your program credits applied. If your credits did not apply and you believe this was in error, contact Lyft support through the Lyft app.

Lyft’s Health Safety Program


In response to COVID-19, Lyft launched a Health Safety Program, which includes:

  • Personal health certification for drivers and riders
  • Required face masks for drivers and riders
  • Health safety education for drivers and riders
  • Distribution of cleaning supplies and masks for drivers
