Opioid Use Disorder and the Opioid Epidemic

The 2022-2023 President's Symposium series explored the opioid epidemic and supporting individuals with opioid use disorder, specifically asking, “How can the University of Maryland, Baltimore, prepare health and human services professionals to address opioid use disorder?” Accordingly, the President’s Fellows embarked on an academic journey exploring the factors influencing the opioid epidemic and applying a critical eye on how UMB could prepare students to address opioid use disorder through policies, activism, education, and resources.

2021-2022 The State of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of Maryland, Baltimore

The 2021-2022 President’s White Paper Project engaged students from the schools of dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, on a yearlong research project and conversation on diversity, equity, and inclusion. The topic explored UMB’s role in creating working and learning environments that foster an authentic sense of belonging for students, staff, faculty, and neighbors.

2020-2021 Health Literacy as a Social Determinant of Health

The 2020-2021 President’s White Paper Project engaged nine students from the schools of dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and social work from the University of Maryland, Baltimore and the University of Maryland, College Park on a yearlong research project and conversation on health literacy. The topic centers on expanding the University's role in improving the relationship between provider and patient, therefore, allowing patients to be well-informed and active decision-makers in their health and the health of their families.

2019-2020 President's Symposium and White Paper: Implementing Core Values

Accountability, civility, collaboration, diversity, excellence, leadership, and knowledge are the core values that guide all policies, practices, and procedures within the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). UMB is unique in that it consists of seven schools functioning as one University. When we came together, seven students representing each of the schools within UMB, our charge was to evaluate how our respective schools, and the University at large, institutionalize all seven of the established core values. Drawing on each of our unique backgrounds, we examined how UMB integrates the core values across each of the seven schools to embody its motto of “Seven Schools, One University”. As a result of this assessment, we were asked to provide actionable recommendations that continue to prioritize UMB’s core values.

Our charge was simple: Use an interprofessional lens to investigate the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) role as an anchor institution in addressing gun violence. Drawing from different professional and cultural backgrounds, we challenge the UMB campus and Baltimore community audiences to consider our intersectional and interprofessional analysis and assessment of the complexities surrounding gun violence, and to take action now.

Global literacy is cross-cultural fluency and responsiveness in understanding, engaging, and communicating in an interconnected world. While the University of Maryland, Baltimore should strive to foster understanding by engaging and communicating in an interconnected world, we suggest that universities should be more proactive to deliberately infuse these practices across the curriculum to develop globally literate professionals.

2016-2017 President’s Symposium and White Paper: Exploring Entrepreneurship

The 2017-2021 University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Strategic Plan emphasizes that UMB will achieve its goal of becoming a dominant economic leader in the region through innovation and entrepreneurship. The plan seeks to harness UMB’s strengths in interdisciplinary and interprofessional teamwork to serve as a catalyst for economic development. This plan incorporates initiatives from all of UMB’s seven schools: the Graduate School and the schools of dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work. Therefore, the 2016-2017 President’s Fellows, an interdisciplinary group of UMB students, were tasked with writing this white paper to assess the current state of entrepreneurship at UMB, to identify existing gaps, and to make appropriate recommendations.

We examined UMB’s environment, curriculum, and policies, and how they work together, with the goal of making recommendations to ensure that cultural competence is a lived value across the University.

2014-2015 President’s Symposium and White Paper: UMB’s Engagement in West Baltimore

A team of University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) students representing diverse disciplines including nursing, law, dentistry, public health, physical therapy, and social work prepared this paper to define and synthesize students’ visions for a University-based community engagement center. The goals of this paper were to define community engagement at UMB, assess current community needs, and present creative ideas for establishing a sustainable urban extension center. We also commented on the role of race, institutional power, and health disparities as barriers to effective community engagement efforts.

2013-2014 President’s Symposium and White Paper: Interprofessional Education at UMB

This report aims to explore how interprofessional education (IPE) is offered, embraced, and used at UMB. We begin by establishing common terms and definitions surrounding IPE and follow with an assessment of the current state of IPE initiatives at UMB. An analysis of survey data collected from UMB students and faculty concerning current opinions on IPE at UMB follows. Next, we break down the costs, benefits, and challenges of formalizing an IPE curriculum at UMB. Finally, we propose recommendations on how best to advance IPE at UMB.

2011-2012 President’s Symposium and White Paper: Urban Renewal

A team of University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) students prepared this white paper to synthesize students’ visions of their University’s role as a neighbor on the Westside and West Baltimore. UMB President Jay A. Perman, MD, issued a challenge to the UMB student body to develop a vision for the surrounding neighborhoods in light of the ongoing integration challenges of the UMB community with local communities. The goal of this paper is to provide a report broadly useful to members of the campus community involved in infrastructure planning, business development, academic program design, and student activities.
