Communities and Cultural Events

The Intercultural Center is committed to honoring and celebrating the diverse identities of students, staff, and faculty at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). Each month, we take the time to acknowledge a particular identity and/or community through heritage month programs. Heritage month events are opportunities for the UMB community to learn about various groups' histories and contributions in the United States and globally.

LGBTQ+ History Month 2021

LGBTQ+ History Month was established in 1994 by a Missouri high school teacher who recognized the importance of celebrating and teaching gay and lesbian history. October was selected partly because of the already established Coming Out Day (Oct. 11). Although the month was first introduced as Lesbian and Gay History Month, it evolved to be more inclusive of individuals who identify as bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, and many other identities focused on gender and sexuality.

The Intercultural Center celebrates the contributions of LGBTQ+ people throughout history while committing to LGBTQ+ justice and inclusion. Check out our events in honor of LGBTQ+ History Month below!
