Communities and Cultural Events

The Intercultural Center is committed to honoring and celebrating the diverse identities of students, staff, and faculty at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). Each month, we take the time to acknowledge a particular identity and/or community through heritage month programs. Heritage month events are opportunities for the UMB community to learn about various groups' histories and contributions in the United States and globally.

Southwest Asian and North African / Middle Eastern Heritage Month

The Intercultural Center acknowledges and celebrates the contributions of Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) / Middle Eastern students, faculty, and staff at UMB as well as across the country, and around the globe.

Last year the Intercultural Center made the decision to use SWANA to describe individuals, cultures, languages, and identities from countries such as Algeria, Iran, and Syria. This year we continue to use SWANA as a decolonized term that emphasizes geography rather than a history of colonialism and imperialism while also using Middle Eastern for its accessibility.
