Portrait of Yvonne LloydWhen Security Officer Yvonne Lloyd joined the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD) 20 years ago, she just wanted to help others. Little did she know, joining the department would change her life. “Funny story, I actually met my husband here,” Lloyd says. Over her career, she’s proud that she sent her two children to college so they could earn their degrees “and be great members of society,” she says.

Inside and outside of work, Lloyd devotes her life to giving back to the community. She feeds the homeless, has block parties, and gives out supplies to elementary school students. She also is a youth director, Sunday school teacher, and oversees a dance ministry.

“Working with young people and shaping them up into young adults is my passion,” Lloyd says.

As a security officer at UMB, she brings her kindness and bright smile to work each day. This compassion and care for the UMB community made Lloyd a safe haven for one employee who has robbed in early November.

“I knew Officer Lloyd would be in my building and I just wanted to get to her,” the employee said. “She was up and in action before I reached the desk and the call went out notifying everyone. … I was no longer alone and I knew I was safe.”

Lloyd enjoys meeting new students and employees from all cultures and all walks of life, and she encourages them to make the most of their time in Baltimore. “Baltimore can be a very beautiful place to live, it’s just what you make of it,” she says. “Stay safe and always be alert while you are out exploring what this great city has to offer.”

Lloyd is now just 24 months from retirement and looks forward to staying home and living life to the fullest. She enjoys going to church and the movies, having dinner with her family and husband, and being social.
