Institutional Resources for Proposals

As you start the proposal writing process, make sure to contact your Associate Dean for Research, research team, and/or grants administrator who staffs your department/center/institute/school for grant applications. They will often be your best guide to questions on budgeting and institutional approval.

Writing for Foundations

The key to success in winning foundation funding is to put the right project in front of the right funder and to individualize the approach for that particular audience (donor, staff and board). Foundations vary widely in their expectations around content and tone. Read the request for proposal or guidelines carefully.

There are several other UMB resources that you will need to become familiar with as you prepare proposals:

• Sponsored Program Administration – SPA offers additional information on funding resources as well as the University forms and contacts required for institutional approval of grants and sponsored projects.
• UM School of Medicine Corporate and Foundation Relations – UMSOM has a corporate and foundation team that provides support to SOM staff and faculty.
