Center for Information Technology Services (CITS) Travel Tips
Before you go, take proactive steps to secure your devices and personally identifiable information by reviewing International IT information on the Global Hub.
In addition, International Operations worked with UMB’s Research Security Program, the Center for Information Technology Services, and the Center for Global Engagement on a Data Security Guide for international travel.
Cell Phones
We advise you buy an international mobile phone plan as it is the only way to have ready access to the International SOS app. Another option is buying a local SIM card, so that you have a local number and can keep in easy contact. Be sure that your phone is unlocked and compatible. Once you arrive in the country, you can purchase pre-paid SIM cards and "pay as you go" credit at markets and telephone stores.
Email & Internet
Eduroam is a secure, worldwide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. It allows students, faculty, and staff from participating institutions (including UMB) to obtain internet connectivity when visiting other participating institutions by utilizing their home institution email addresses on their laptops, smartphone, or other devices.
To set up your device, follow the appropriate guide below. Log in with your UMB credentials (email address and password).
