Award Acceptance
Students must view and accept or decline all awards on SURFS.

Disbursement
Financial aid awards are disbursed approximately 10 days before the beginning of each academic term (with the exception of work study, which is paid biweekly).

A financial aid calendar, including disbursement dates, can be found here.

Grants, scholarships, and institutional loan funds are credited to the student's account for tuition and fees before Federal Stafford Loan funds during disbursement. Any grant, scholarship, or institutional loan funds in excess of tuition and fees are mailed to the student. Also, any grant, scholarship, or institutional loan accepted by a student with a zero balance after all initial disbursements will be mailed. A mailed refund typically reaches the student four weeks after the date of disbursement.

Federal Stafford and private/alternative loan funds are sent to the Student Accounting Office by electronic funds transfer (EFT). The student's account will be credited for tuition and fees and any remaining amount will be available as a refund via HigherOne. Please note if the student chose a lender that does not utilize EFT, the student must sign the paper check when it arrives at the Student Accounting Office.

Tuition Refunds
Students who drop credits, withdraw from UMB, or whose classification is changed to Maryland resident status for tuition purposes may be entitled to a refund of tuition and fees for the semester.

The Office of the Registrar has Registration Refund Policies available online. If financial aid has been credited or disbursed to a student who drops credits or withdraws, it may be required that part of all of the refund(s) be returned to the lender. For more information, see withdrawal below.

Withdrawal
Students receiving financial aid who drop credits or withdraw from UMB should contact the Student Financial Aid Office.

Federal regulations require that a percentage of Federal Title IV financial aid funds be returned as repayment for non-completion of the semester. Therefore, if a student withdraws from UMB before 60 percent of the semester has been completed, they will have their financial aid recalculated based on the date of withdrawal. The Student Accounting Office will calculate the amount of funds to be returned based on the Department of Education's repayment formula.
