Scholarships

We offer a number of scholarships to students who demonstrate a strong ability to succeed through their academic achievements, community leadership, and service.

    2018 Recipient,
    PNC (Mercantile) Scholarship

    In 2014, Kathryn established Planet Smilez, a non-profit which educates children about the importance of oral health. Ultimately, she wants to continue to grow Planet Smilez, as well as be involved in dental public health initiatives that enhance the lives of children.

    Jon Christian Merkel Scholarship

    As the president of the student Sightsavers, School of Medicine student Arianna Lee hopes to increase the accessibility of vision screenings for the underserved population to help catch irreversible vision loss early and connect patients to care and treatment options.

    A Doctor in Nursing Practice candidate at UMB, Anne Maria has a great passion for caring for others and aspires to get involved with policy making to decrease health disparities in the community.

Endowed Scholarships

Endowed scholarships are competitive awards requiring a record of demonstrated academic achievement and commitment to the community. Currently enrolled degree-seeking graduate and professional students at the University of Maryland, Baltimore may be eligible to apply for one or more endowed scholarships. Students entering into their last semester of study are not eligible to apply.

The Endowed Scholarship Application for the 2018-2019 academic year is now closed. The application for the 2019-2020 academic year will open in the spring semester. For questions or inquiries please email endowedscholarship@umaryland.edu.

Hans R. Wilhelmsen Memorial Scholarship Fund for Dental and Medical Education
Scholarship Awards: One per academic year at $1,200 each

PURPOSE

The purpose of the fund shall be to encourage and financially assist students who, after receiving a dental degree from an accredited school, choose to pursue a medical degree at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, or who, after receiving a medical degree from an accredited school, choose to pursue a dental degree at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicant must be currently enrolled as a medical or dental student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore and fit the student profile established above.

Jon Christian Merkel Scholarship Fund
Scholarship Awards: Three per academic year at $2,000 each

PURPOSE

The purpose of the fund is to benefit students who demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. 

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be able to demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate an interest in service.

Lois Young-Thomas Memorial Scholarship and Leadership Guild Endowment
Scholarship Awards: Two per academic year at $7,500 each

PURPOSE

The purpose of the fund is to provide one or more scholarships for full-time students enrolled in a professional or graduate program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicant must be a Maryland resident enrolled as a full-time student in a UMB professional or graduate school, be in good academic standing, and demonstrate leadership skills and service achievement within the University and/or community. Preference will be given to incoming first-year students who demonstrate financial need and express interest in practicing in Maryland upon graduation.

PNC (Mercantile) Scholarship Endowment
Scholarship Awards: Two per academic year at $1,500 each

PURPOSE

The purpose of the fund shall be to provide endowed support for one or more annual scholarships for students enrolled in a professional program at the University of Maryland. Baltimore.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be enrolled in a professional program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated financial need and an interest in service.

President's Scholarship Fund for the University of Maryland
Scholarship Awards: 10 per academic year at $2,400 each

PURPOSE

The purpose of the fund shall be to provide endowed support of scholarships for students enrolled at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. 

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be able to demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate an interest in service.

The Southern Management Corporation Scholarship Fund
Scholarship Awards: 10 per academic year at $2,250 each

PURPOSE

The purpose of the fund shall be to provide annual scholarships for students enrolled at the University of Maryland Baltimore following graduation from Prince George's Community College.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be residents of Prince George's County; it is strongly preferred that they are graduates of Prince George's Community College. Preference will be given to students who live in a Southern Management Corporation community, as well as those students who have demonstrated financial need and an interest in service. Students enrolled in the Carey School of Law are not eligible for this award.

State Scholarships

State scholarships are available to students who are classified as residents of Maryland by the Office of the Registrar. 

Maryland residents enrolled in MD, DDS, JD, PharmD, MSW, or Nursing MS degree programs at UMB should file a FAFSA by March 1 for consideration. The awards are distributed by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC).
