Reporting directly to the president, the provost is the second-ranking official at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. As the University’s chief academic officer, the provost works collaboratively and in close coordination with the deans of each of the University’s seven schools.

The provost provides leadership and oversight in the development and implementation of all plans, policies, and procedures that support and advance the University’s academic strategies and priorities in alignment with our mission, strategic plan, and accreditation standards both at the school and institutional level.

Together with the president, the provost is responsible for nurturing and preserving a collegial, effective, and productive shared-governance relationship with the faculty, staff, and student senates. The provost is the University’s chief strategy officer and oversees strategic planning at the institutional level. The provost is the University’s liaison to the Maryland Higher Education Commission, the University System of Maryland, and other external agencies and organizations.
