Professional Development

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines for professional development of Maryland Global Initiatives Corporation (MGIC) employees and to encourage professional development and support career growth.

Background

MGIC engages employees outside the United States through Employer of Record (EOR) service providers on behalf of Requesting Units in the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and Affiliate Entities.

The International Operations (IO) division of UMB’s Administration and Finance department administers the MGIC mechanism and manages its human resources (HR) function.

Policy Statement

  1. MGIC encourages continuous learning and development of its employees. Professional development is a collaboration between the employee and their supervisor, and may include mentorship, coaching, self-directed learning, virtual and in-person learning, access to professional networks, and other supports to an employee’s career growth.
  2. UMB and Affiliate Entities shall strive to make learning and growth opportunities available to MGIC employees, in consideration of the employee’s remote working location and inherent restrictions as a contractual employee via a third-party EOR.
  3. Financial investment in the professional development of MGIC employees is at the discretion of the Requesting Unit, aligned to its business needs and its available budget resources.

Scope

This policy applies to all MGIC employees and the Requesting Units to which employees are assigned.

Responsibilities

  1. MGIC employees: Take initiative for professional development in partnership with supervisor.
  2. Requesting Units: Partner with MGIC employees to develop and support professional growth. Promote and facilitate development opportunities in alignment with business needs.
