Student Experience

The Student Experience Survey was developed to better understand student experiences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) within their school, academic program, and the broader University. This survey will help identify areas where the University can develop initiatives that create, affirm, and strengthen a diverse, inclusive, equitable, and just UMB community that is grounded in our core values.

The survey was open from Feb. 27 to March 15, 2024 and is now closed.

Survey results will be available on this website and the University’s new Institutional Dashboard site. More information coming soon.

UMB is committed to creating safe and healthy environments that are free of discrimination. If you have any questions about the survey, please email umbexperience@umaryland.edu.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will student responses to this survey contribute to meaningful changes at the University?

As a student, your responses to the Student Experience Survey are integral to informing the development of strategies that help us embrace diversity, empower meaningful change, and foster a campus culture of belonging for all UMB students.

Findings from previous experience surveys were shared with the UMB community in 2018 and 2020 and have influenced numerous University action items, including:

  • The UMB Student Pantry
  • Numerous school initiatives — creation of diversity officer positions, climate studies, review/changes of curricula, etc.
  • The Intercultural Center
  • Updating gender-inclusive bathroom signage across the University
  • Finalization of the Name Authorization Form and Policy
  • The diversity officer position in the University Student Government Association (USGA)

Will students be informed about the survey results?

Yes. After the survey is closed, Tritonlytics, the external survey administrator, will present insights and recommendations to University leaders, including each school’s dean, to assist us in creating actionable plans for improving the environment, enhancing the student experience, and strengthening student engagement.

The survey results will be available on this website and the University’s new Institutional Dashboard site.

Will everyone who completes the survey receive a free treat?

Yes! All UMB students who complete the survey will receive a free treat as a token of our appreciation.

  • Students who complete the survey before or during the 2024 Launch Party can receive their treat that afternoon.
  • Throughout the survey, there will be tables around campus to answer questions about the survey and provide additional opportunities for students to pick up their coupon. See above for the dates and times to pick up your coupon.
  • Off-campus students studying virtually or at Shady Grove can have their free treat mailed to them. Instructions are located on your completion coupon.

Do all students have to complete the survey?

All currently enrolled students at UMB will receive a link to the survey in their umaryland.edu inbox.

All students are encouraged to participate, as it will help the University understand the institutional, department, and school-level factors that impact your learning, research, interactions, and overall academic performance. Higher rates of participation help to ensure that we are collect the most valid and reliable data on which to make changes.

Participation in this survey is voluntary. If you decide to participate, you can skip questions or stop participating at any time without penalty. Refusal to take part in the survey will not result in any negative consequences.

Is the survey anonymous?

Responses to the survey are confidential. “Confidential” does not equate to “anonymous.” In the event of any publication or presentation of the survey results, no personally identifiable information will be shared. Survey responses will be reported in terms of groups of students rather than as individual cases.

Is this survey connected to the other climate, diversity, or experience surveys I may have received in spring 2024?

No. The Student Experience Survey is administered by UMB Student Affairs in collaboration with the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. It is not the same survey as the Climate Survey on Sexual Misconduct, which you have received from the Office of Accountability and Compliance, or any other surveys you may have received in the spring 2024 semester.

Do I have to complete the survey all at once?

If you cannot finish the survey all at once, you can return to it later. Click the FINISH LATER button. Your responses will be saved from where you left off. Be sure to keep your original email to re-enter your survey. If you delete this email, you cannot be sent another one.
