SPA/SPAC May 6th In-Person Workshop Recap
UMB’s Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA) and Sponsored Programs Accounting & Compliance (SPAC) functions work together in close partnership to ensure that sponsored research awards are established, managed, and closed out with accuracy, compliance, and transparency. SPA focuses on proposal submission, award negotiation, acceptance, and processing to SPAC for their role in overseeing post-award financial management, billing, collections, and other financial compliance activities.
The effectiveness of this end-to-end lifecycle depends on smooth, well-coordinated operations between the two areas—particularly as awards are created and updated. Clear communication, consistent data flow, and timely processing help minimize errors, reduce risk, and support investigators by ensuring funds are available and managed appropriately. Strong operational alignment ultimately reinforces institutional stewardship, compliance with sponsor requirements, and the successful execution of UMB’s research mission.
To support and reinforce this collaboration and relationship, the two offices took the day on May 6th to participate in an in-person workshop. One of the exercises was to build a literal bridge with your tablemates. While we may not be great at building physical bridges with popsicle sticks and string, this workshop helped each office build a strong figurative bridge! We met our colleagues, learned more about each other, and understood more of their respective responsibilities, challenges, and goals, when it comes to supporting compliant and effective research at UMB. And we had fun doing it!
