Safety, Support, and Resources at UMB
Dear UMB Community:
This past weekend’s news broke my heart. Nearly 20 people dead and dozens more injured in hate-filled attacks around the world. The victims are university students, children, friends, and loved ones. No one should ever be the victim of violence, no matter where they study, how they pray, whom they love, nor any other reason. Please pause with me as we remember these precious lives lost.
From the moment you arrive at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), your safety is my top priority. Every student, employee, and visitor deserves to feel safe where they learn, work, and visit. Let me be clear: There is no known increased threat to our UMB community.
Our UMB Police and Public Safety team remains vigilant. We’re available 24/7 — in our buildings, on our sidewalks, and on patrol. You can call us day or night at 410-706-6882 (6-6882 from an on-campus phone). Please take a moment now to program this number in your phone.
We ask for your support to help keep our community safe. Always swipe your UMID or sign in at the visitor kiosk. Do not allow others to follow you inside UMB buildings. Make sure doors close securely behind you when you leave, and do not prop doors open. If you ever notice something unusual — an unattended bag, someone pulling many car door handles, an unsecured door, or any other activity that gives you pause — call us. You are never bothering us. Your call helps keep our community safe.
Physical safety and mental well-being go hand-in-hand. If you need help, resources are available. Our Student Counseling Center and Employee Assistance Program provide free 24/7 support. If you are in distress or just need someone to talk with, I encourage you to take advantage of these wonderful programs.
In moments like these, community matters more than ever. Let’s treat one another with respect and compassion, look out for one another, and continue forward with a shared commitment to keeping UMB safe.
Sincerely,
Thomas Leone, MSL
Assistant Vice President for Public Safety and Chief of Police
