Supporting Work-Life Balance
At the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), employees have access to comprehensive leave and time off policies designed to help them manage personal responsibilities, pursue community service, and prioritize their well-being. These policies include over four weeks of vacation accrued each year, paid holidays, unlimited accrual of sick time, and comprehensive health insurance and retirement option.
Annual Leave
UMB provides a structured annual leave policy to support the well-being and work-life balance of our employees. Accrual rates for annual leave — allowing staff to take paid time off for rest, relaxation, or personal matters — vary by employment status and years of service.
Holidays
UMB provides a total of 16 annual holidays (17 in general or congressional election years) which will include four "floaters". Holidays must be scheduled and used in the calendar year in which they occur and may not be carried over into the following calendar year.
Family Medical Leave (FMLA)
Family Medical Leave entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage.
Paid Family Medical Leave (PFML)
Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) is a new paid, job‑protected leave benefit available to eligible employees of the University System of Maryland (USM), including those at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) beginning July 1, 2026.
PFML Form can be accessed from Forms. Search for "PFML" in the Filter by keyword field to access and download the form.
Personal Leave
Eligible employees are entitled to three days (24 hours) of personal leave per calendar year except
that employees shall receive four (4) days (not to exceed 32 hours) of personal leave in a leap year. Part-time employees working 50 percent time or more shall receive personal leave on a prorated basis.
