Substance use and Harm Reduction
Let’s talk about substance use and recovery. As the nation’s opioid epidemic continues, more than 40 states have reported increases in opioid-related mortality as well as ongoing concerns for those with a mental illness or substance use disorder in counties and other areas within the state. UMB is committed to promoting activities and providing resources that promote the health and wellness of students, especially students who are seeking alcohol and substance use support and recovery.
Substance use exists on a spectrum, and students may seek information, support, recovery resources, or simply opportunities to learn more about how substances affect health and well-being. Whether you are exploring your own relationship with alcohol or other drugs, supporting a friend, living in recovery, or interested in harm reduction and overdose prevention, URecFit and Wellness is committed to providing resources, education, and supportive connections.

Naloxone (Narcan®) is a life-saving medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. UMB periodically offers naloxone training opportunities to help students recognize the signs of an overdose and respond appropriately in an emergency. Students are encouraged to learn about overdose prevention and carry naloxone when appropriate.
