At UMB, inclusive excellence is both a commitment and a practice. IEIE leads UMBs initiatives and develops strategics to advance equity through data informed decisions to improve how we serve our students and our community, and to improve the human condition and serve the public good.
At the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), inclusive excellence and institutional effectiveness are not separate pursuits — they are one.
The Office of Inclusive Excellence and Institutional Effectiveness (IEIE) helps UMB understand how it is performing and where it can improve. We bring together data, support decision-making, and work with partners across the University to strengthen programs, develop leaders, and create a community where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
Rooted in UMB’s core values of equity and justice, our work connects the University’s strategic plan goals to measurable outcomes, assessment, and accountability systems. We believe that a university committed to improving the human condition must reflect that commitment in how it measures performance, plan for the future, and support every member of its community.
IEIE supports Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) as a way faculty and staff build community and connection at UMB. ERGs are voluntary, employee‑led groups that bring together employees across the university around shared personal or professional interests, backgrounds, or experiences. Through ERGs, employees foster engagement, belonging, and mutual support while contributing to a more inclusive campus culture.
