The Office of Inclusive Excellence and Institutional Effectiveness (IEIE) integrates two core areas of work at UMB: advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion, and strengthening institutional performance through data, planning, and assessment. This integration reflects a shared understanding that institutional effectiveness and inclusive excellence are not separate efforts—they are mutually reinforcing and must be advanced together.

IEIE was established to strengthen UMB’s mission and values by leading data-informed planning, continuous improvement, and evidence-based decision-making. Our work expands access and opportunity, fosters belonging, and helps create an environment where all members of the UMB community can thrive.

We connect the University's goals to the structures, processes, and evidence needed to achieve them.

Our Pillars

  • Inclusive Excellence in Teaching, Learning, Research, and Service

We work alongside faculty, staff, and students to integrate equity and inclusion into the academic and professional life of the university — in the classroom, in research, and in how we serve our communities.

  • Data-Driven Planning, Continuous Improvement and Acountability

We provide the evidence that informs strategic decisions, tracks institutional progress, and holds UMB accountable to its stated goals. Good data, clearly communicated, is how this university knows where it stands and where it needs to go.

  • Strategic Partnerships, Alignment and Capacity Building

We build the internal relationships and shared infrastructure that allow schools, units, and offices across UMB to work toward common goals. Effective change at a complex institution requires coordination, trust, and the tools to sustain progress over time.

  • Cultivating a Culture of Belonging, Dialogue, and Well-Being

We support the conditions that allow every member of the UMB community to contribute fully — through intentional programming, structured dialogue, and a sustained commitment to affirming the identities and experiences each person brings to this institution.

Evidence, Transparency, and Accountability

To ensure transparency and institutional accountability, IEIE also supports the University’s formal reporting and accreditation responsibilities. This work connects institutional data, assessment, and equity efforts to the required disclosures and external standards that demonstrate UMB’s performance and integrity. Additionally, we produce official reports to external agencies for transparent consumer decision-making.

Moving the Institution Forward

IEIE serves as a bridge between strategy and practice, linking planning, assessment, accreditation, and equity work into a coherent institutional approach. By aligning data, governance, and community engagement, the office helps ensure that UMB’s commitment to improving the human condition is reflected in measurable outcomes, informed decisions, and meaningful opportunities for all.
