Due to the elevated security risks stemming from recent tragic events related to the Israel-Hamas conflict, International Operations recommends the following precautionary measures for UMB travelers at all locations:
- Be aware of your surroundings, and especially vigilant when you are out and about in public areas.
- Avoid large crowds. Exercise caution around tourist areas, shopping areas, transport hubs, major sporting, music and cultural events, and places of worship.
- Avoid demonstrations related to the conflict.
- Keep a low profile (do not wear clothing or jewelry that clearly identifies you as American or any particular faith).
- Monitor local media and follow all local (government and university) advice.
- Make sure you have emergency contact information readily available, including UMB’s Incident Response Line, International SOS, and the nearest diplomatic mission of your country of nationality.
- As applicable, make sure you have enrolled in STEP to provide your contact information and be notified of any alerts from the U.S. Embassy.
- If you need immediate assistance, please contact International SOS via their closest Regional Assistance Center and then contact International Operations via the Incident Reporting Line at +1 410 706-0300 or via e-mail at internationalops@umaryland.edu.
