For this year’s STEM Expo, our scholars from Cohorts 4 and 5 have gone above and beyond to provide exceptional presentations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Scholars have prepared for this event by solidifying their understanding of the foundations of research. Through in-person and online courses, scholars have learned how to develop a research question, search for credible resources, review scholarly literature, and draw conclusions. This year, the scholars have diligently worked to prepare presentations on topics such as artificial intelligence, cancer, heart transplants, nanorobotics, and more with an emphasis on health disparities in the African American population.
This summer, scholars in Cohorts 1, 2, and 3 participated in the online Community Health Worker curriculum designed by Morehouse School of Medicine. C2 scholars spent five weeks learning about careers in health care, advocating for their health, and how to make a difference in the health of their families and community. While exploring modules on the health care system, anatomy, and patient care, scholars also applied the principles of human-centered design to developing community health projects. Scholars researched health challenges facing communities in Baltimore and began to brainstorm solutions.
