What is the SRE?

The UMB Secure Research Environment (SRE) is a protected virtual workspace for research projects that use sensitive or restricted data, including information with Personally Identifiable Information (PII) or Protected Health Information (PHI). Researchers access the SRE through a secure virtual desktop, where project data, software, and tools are kept in a controlled environment.

Why use the SRE?

The SRE helps protect sensitive research data by limiting access to approved project team members and keeping each project’s data separate. It is required for research involving University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) clinical data and is recommended for projects that need extra protection for sensitive data or intellectual property. Data entering or leaving the SRE is managed through approved support processes to help ensure information is handled securely.

Join the SRE Community at UMB

The SRE is designed to support secure, efficient research — and CITS is here to help. If you have questions about available software, licensing, or the request process, we encourage you to join the SRE open sessions the last Friday of every month with a CITS IT Cloud Architect Specialist.
