CITS Department Overviews
CITS provides many services to the UMB community. If you have questions, comments, or need assistance with any IT-related issues, please contact the relevant department below.
The CITS Business Operations (CBO) team’s role is to manage, administer, report and facilitate the business and administrative processes necessary for the successful execution of the department’s day-to-day operations and the achievement of UMB’s Strategic Technology Goals. This includes processing new contracts or renewals, initiating and tracking financial transactions, managing chargeback requests and cost-sharing models, preparing budget reports, and facilitating travel.

The Data Analytics and Reporting department performs data analytics and reporting activities in support of UMB’s mission, academic enterprise, operations, and administrative services.

The Enterprise Applications Team is dedicated to managing and supporting UMB’s essential enterprise systems. The department’s responsibilities encompass applications for student administration, human capital management, financials, research administration, workflow and document management, systems integration, and campus philanthropy systems. The team collaborates closely with UMB’s central administration offices and campus end users to ensure that these systems run smoothly and efficiently, facilitating the essential operations that drive the University forward.
As part of the Center for Information Technology Services (CITS), Information Technology (IT) Services and Support provides campuswide troubleshooting and training for Enterprise (campuswide) resources. Additionally, IT Services and Support provides hands-on support hardware, software, and additional IT needs across central administrative units.

IT Security, Compliance, and Privacy oversees IT security, audit compliance, and a technical resource for the Maryland Privacy Law that went into effect October 2024.

The CITS Project Management Office (PMO) offers project management assistance of all types for IT projects of any size. Project involvement can range from assistance with planning an IT project to creating a project plan and managing the IT project from start to finish.
The Technology Operations department within CITS includes the following IT functions:
- Infrastructure Services and Data Center Operations: Server administration, cloud computing, data center operations
- Network and Communication Services: Network operations, cloud networking, telecommunications
- Data Management and Systems Integration: Database administration, identity management, systems integration
- Web Development: Custom web application development, website management, web accessibility
- Research Computing: Secure Research Environment (SRE), research IT consultation, REDCap

VoiceThread Is Being Retired at UMB

The Center for Information Technology Services (CITS) would like to inform instructors, students, and educational technology staff that the multimedia discussion platform VoiceThread, which is integrated with Blackboard, will be retired at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). The campus-wide license for VoiceThread will end June 30, 2026, after which it will no longer be available for campus-wide use. Blackboard Maintenance/Downtime

Blackboard will be undergoing maintenance by the vendor on July 29, 2026 11:00 PM EST. The maintenance downtime is expected to last approximately two hours. The Blackboard application will be unavailable during this maintenance window.
