Best Practices for Assessment in Online Learning: Foundation to Application

Assessment is a critical element of any teaching and learning environment. When developing assessments, instructors need to consider the purpose, scope, and content of assessments. The characteristics of face-to-face classroom assessment such as learner-centered, context-specific, and ongoing do not change when assessing learners in online and hybrid environments; however, they are implemented in different ways. Of utmost importance, instructors should ensure that their assessments are aligned, practical, reflective, iterative, and learner-centered (APRIL). This session will discuss effective practices for designing formative and summative assessments in online and hybrid learning environments. Concrete examples will be provided, including practices for utilizing AI in authentic assessments.

Post attendance, attendees will be able to

  1. Describe the principles of effective assessments
  2. Describe the “APRIL” approach in designing assessments for the online learning environment
  3. Identify mechanisms of integrating AI into online learning assessments.

Attendees will be engaged through facilitated reflective discussion, and polling/audience responses to questions. Assessment is a critical element of any teaching and learning environment.
