Your vote matters! This year, a total of 245 million eligible voters are predicted to cast their ballots.  The Silent Generation and Baby Boomers account for an estimated 136 million of those votes. Although these are staggering numbers, Gen X, Z and Millennials account for the estimated remaining 106 million eligible voters. Those numbers equate to having a powerful potential presence in any election.

By voting, students get to weigh in on critical topics such as the environment, the economy, and social justice. Student voters can vote based on a candidate’s plan to fund higher education and address student debt.

Being an informed voter is key to addressing the issues that matter to YOU. Research what is on your ballot to make the most informed decision!

The aftermath of an election can be overwhelming, and it’s natural to feel a mix of emotions. As graduate students, the stress from political events can impact your academic performance and mental well-being. Guidance for Student Organization Engagement in Political Activity

UMB Student Affairs reminds students about student organization engagement in political activity in the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) community. UMB values and supports the expression and exchange of ideas and encourages students to exercise their rights and privileges by participating in the political process. However, as a state institution, UMB funding cannot be used to purchase or fund partisan political electioneering activities or items.  

The following guidance is provided for students:  

• For standards and procedures on use of UMB facilities by campus groups, affiliated organizations, and others, see: https://www.umaryland.edu/policies-and-procedures/library/administration/policies/vi-410a.php 

• According to University branding requirements, UMB’s name or logo cannot be used to suggest UMB’s endorsement of a candidate or for other partisan political electioneering activities. UMB’s name or logo cannot be used without prior approval. This includes the use of UMB’s name or logo on letterhead, envelopes, UMB email accounts/signatures, websites, telephone lines, or voicemail systems for communications.  

• University funds, including funds from the University Student Government Association (USGA) and other departments, may not be used to purchase goods or services in support or in opposition of any candidate, campaign, issue, or political party. 

• There are no restrictions on student organizations participating in nonpartisan political activities such as nonpartisan voter registration activities and voter education programs, provided these activities do not indicate a preference for or opposition to a political party or candidates who have taken a particular position and adherence to any relevant University policies and procedures.  

• UMB-supported groups are expected to welcome all students regardless of political persuasion or position and uphold the University’s core values, including Respect and Integrity and Equity and Justice.  

Remember, individuals remain free to be involved in the election process as they choose, as long as it is in a lawful manner that does not include or imply University involvement.
