Community and civic engagement encompasses the many ways individuals participate in and contribute to the well-being of their communities. These experiences strengthen communities while fostering leadership, collaboration, and social responsibility.

At UMB, civic and community engagement reflects a commitment to building meaningful relationships, strengthening communities, and working collaboratively toward the public good. Some of these dimensions include:

  • Volunteering  
  • Voting and civic participation (e.g., serving as a poll worker)  
  • Advocacy and public awareness efforts  
  • Community organizing  
  • Mutual aid  
  • Arts and cultural participation  
  • Participation in neighborhood or community associations  
  • Public service (e.g., serving on a school board, advisory council, nonprofit board, or local commission)
  • Recreational or social activities that build connection and belonging

    By voting, students get to weigh in on critical topics such as the environment, the economy, and social justice.

  • Student Volunteering and Service

    Students are encouraged to engage in meaningful volunteer experiences and mutually beneficial community initiatives in West Baltimore and beyond.

  • Community and Civic Engagement Reflection Activities

     

    Faculty may assign the following reflective activities to support students' understanding of community and civic engagement. Students may also voluntarily complete the activity and submit their reflection to dl-ssle@umaryland.edu for an opportunity to be featured in The Elm.

Community & Civic Engagement Statement  

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) values civic and community engagement as an important part of student learning and professional development. Civic engagement includes voting, staying informed about public issues, volunteering, taking part in community events, building relationships across diverse communities, and contributing to the well-being of others. Students are encouraged to engage with the Baltimore community and broader civic life through meaningful participation, reflection, and engagement. Opportunities for involvement can be found on UMBengaged, at the Community Engagement Center, and through programs offered through the Office of Student Success, Leadership, and Engagement, Office of Community and Civic Engagement, and across all of UMB’s schools. Civic engagement is an ongoing practice that strengthens communities, fosters belonging, and supports active citizenship.

Report an Incident

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) holds Respect and Integrity, Well-Being and Sustainability, Equity and Justice, and Innovation and Discovery as our shared core values. Any violation of a community member’s civil rights is destructive to and contradicts our core values. 

Any member of the University community can make a civil rights report.

Examples may include defacement of posters or signs, comments or messages, jokes or humor, vandalism to personal or university property, deliberate exclusion from activities, or similar acts.
