    Nia Williams

    Nia Williams

PFC Nia Williams loves meeting people from different walks of life.

“I became a police officer to make a difference in my community and to protect those that can’t protect themselves,” she says. The officer has been with the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) for two months, but previously served as a Florida state trooper for three years.

As a trooper, Williams reflects on how one tragedy built a lifelong connection. “I had to notify a family that one of their loved ones was no longer with us,” she says. “I prayed and cried with the family for hours. The mother of that child still stays connected with me to express how grateful she is.”

Police officers face many challenges, such as making family notifications after a tragedy. Williams says another challenge is the adrenaline of a high-priority call.

“Your heart is beating so fast. You have all the possibilities of how things can turn out running through your head,” she says. “I take deep breaths and slow myself down so I am aware of each action I take.”

Williams have lived in five states, including Florida and Maryland. She says each is dear to her heart. Now at UMB, Williams is interested in starting law school! She encourages students to be observant of their surroundings.

Outside of work, Williams enjoys cooking for family and friends and trying new activities, like Pilates, kickboxing, and yoga!
