- Switch off nonessential equipment (microwaves, printers, etc.)
- Enable power-saving settings on computers and devices
- Adjust ultra-low temperature freezers (-80°C → -70°C) for major energy savings
Support Lab Efficiency
- Close fume hood sashes when not in use
- Consolidate freezers
- Buy energy star equipment
- Turn off or use timers on small equipment (water baths, shakers, etc.)
- Avoid blocking thermostats and occupancy sensors with equipment, storage, or lab coats
Adopt Smart Habits

- Dress appropriately for seasonal indoor temperatures.
- On hot, sunny days, partially close the shades or blinds to reduce the solar heat gain in the room.
- Set your computer power management so that your computer hibernates, and your monitor turns off when unattended for more than 15 minutes.
- Turn off the lights when exiting rooms.
- Turn off lights whenever daylight provides sufficient lighting
