Pillar: Cultivating a Culture of Belonging, Dialogue, and Well-Being

Strong communities are built through connection, engagement, dialogue, and shared opportunities to learn and grow. IEIE partners with UMB schools, administrative units, and community partners to cultivate a culture of belonging and well-being where students, faculty, staff, and community members can connect, contribute, and thrive.

Through programs, resources, events, partnerships, and learning opportunities, we help strengthen community, foster meaningful engagement, support personal and professional growth, and connect people with the resources they need to succeed. Our work reflects UMB’s mission, strategic priorities, and core values and supports the University’s commitment to student, faculty, and staff success.

Why It Matters

A strong sense of belonging and well-being contributes to learning, engagement, collaboration, and success. When individuals feel connected to their community and supported in their personal and professional growth, they are better positioned to contribute their talents, pursue opportunities, and achieve their goals.

IEIE is able to do this work through a series of assessments, the collection and analysis of data, and the use of data to inform decisions, programs, and strategies that advance a strong sense of belonging and well-being across the University. By grounding its work in evidence and community needs, IEIE helps create the conditions for students, faculty, and staff to thrive by fostering meaningful connections, strengthening engagement, expanding access to resources, and supporting opportunities for growth and development. This work directly advances equitable access to resources, meaningful community, holistic well-being, and opportunities for growth.

The impact of this work includes:

  • Students connect, access resources, and pursue success through supports informed by assessment findings, needs, and engagement data.
  • Faculty benefit from data-informed learning, collaboration, mentoring, and growth opportunities that strengthen teaching, engagement, and community.
  • Staff experience stronger engagement, connection, and contribution through initiatives shaped by feedback, participation data, and climate assessments.
  • Schools and units use data-informed partnerships and shared learning to guide decisions, strengthen community, and advance institutional effectiveness.

Together, these efforts help cultivate a university community where individuals can learn, contribute, and thrive while advancing UMB's mission to improve the human condition and serve the public good.
