Tuition Reimbursement

Tuition reimbursement is an educational benefit that covers job-related courses not available as a practical matter at any USM or reciprocal institution.

For classes that are available at a University System of Maryland institution, please refer instead to the information about Tuition Remission.

For questions regarding Tuition Reimbursement, please contact the Benefits office at 410-706-2616 or HRBenefits@umaryland.edu.

Who is eligible?

All full-time regular staff and faculty are eligible for this program. Contractual employees are not eligible.

What is the maximum reimbursement per semester?

The maximum reimbursement is for one course, not to exceed 4 credits. The maximum allowance per credit is not to exceed the current charge for one (equivalent) graduate/undergraduate credit hour at the University of Maryland, College Park.

How does an employee get reimbursed?

Employees must complete a Tuition Reimbursement Form and include a recommendation letter from the department head/designee explaining how the course is job-related.  This letter should describe how the course is required for the employee to keep their current job or maintain/improve the skills required for the employee’s current job.  Request forms must be submitted by the department head and pre-approved by HRS prior to the beginning of the class. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the employee must provide official course grade and proof of payment to the department, which then initiates the reimbursement process. See specific directions at the bottom of the tuition reimbursement request form.

Detailed instructions can be found in the Policies & Procedures Library.

Is the department/grant charged for tuition reimbursement?

Yes.
