Life insurance provides a payout to beneficiaries when an employee dies, ensuring financial support for loved ones. 
Disability insurance offers partial income if an employee cannot work because of illness or injury, helping maintain financial stability.

Both benefits are designed to safeguard families from the financial impact of unexpected life changes.

Term Life Insurance

Term life insurance is available through the state of Maryland’s Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and the University System of Maryland (USM).

Benefit-eligible employees may enroll in both plans.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

Optional Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage is available through the state of Maryland’s Department of Budget and Management (DBM).

Long-term Disability

The University System of Maryland (USM) offers long-term disability (LTD). This plan provides enrollees with a percentage of their gross monthly salary if they cannot work because of a covered injury, illness, or accidental loss of life.

How to Enroll

1. Visit MetLife USM Portal.
2. Click the Enroll/View Coverage button.
3. Log in:
   • Use your employee ID: Your W Number (e.g., W1123456, no dashes or spaces)
   • Your PIN (password): Last four digits of your W number followed by your four-digit birth year (e.g., 34561989)
4. Follow instructions to review your coverage options, enroll, or update your selections.

Note: If you’re a regular or CII employee working 20 hours or more per week, you can enroll in University System of Maryland (USM)-sponsored MetLife Life and Long-Term Disability (LTD) benefits, make changes, or cancel your benefits anytime during the year. You’ll no longer need to wait until the annual enrollment period.
