February 25, 2026- Mexico: Security recommendations for Mexico
Effective February 25, 2026- International Operations recommends against unnecessary travel to Mexico (with the exception of Mexico City) due to an unstable security environment stemming from criminal activity. Criminal organizations have recently engaged in attacks against security forces and blocked roads in several states, including near major tourist destinations such as Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, and elsewhere, in retaliation for the killing of a major drug cartel leader by Mexican security forces on February 22.
Travel to Mexico City can continue as planned; please contact International Operations at internationaltravel@umaryland.edu if planning travel to any other location in Mexico.
