Supporting faculty as they prepare for promotion and tenure.
Pathways to Promotion: A Group Coaching Program for Faculty Advancement and Tenure
The advancement, promotion, and tenure (APT) process is integral to the faculty development journey. While programs, departments, and schools are responsible for policies and procedures around APT, the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning is excited to announce another layer of support for faculty preparing to advance.
This group coaching program will serve UMB faculty one to two years away from a promotion application. Working in community, participants will engage with a trained coach and each other to prepare for this process. Through group discussions, reflections and assignments, and peer accountability, faculty in this program will walk away feeling empowered and prepared to begin and/or make progress on their promotion packets.
Specifically, participants will create a personal vision for their promotion, gain clarity on the promotion process within their school/department, and identify their professional strengths, as well as areas in their applications that might need bolstering. Participants will leave with a personalized map and timeline for their promotion process, as well as a deeper understanding of the resources that can support them going forward.
Objectives
By the end of this program, participants will have:
- Articulated a vision for their individual promotion pathway
- Gained clarity on the guidelines and procedures for the promotion process in their individual program and school
- Identified strengths to spotlight and gaps to fill in their promotion application materials
- Created an individualized plan of action and timeline (the roadmap) to prepare their application
- Identified a promotion “board of directors” – people on and off-campus-- who can support them in all aspects of this journey
- Designed a wellness plan to ensure their emotional well-being during the process and beyond
