Stepping off the bus along Campus Drive, half a dozen ninth-grade CURE Scholars take in the sights of the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP). The scholars have visited a number of other colleges this past year, but none quite like UMCP.

UMB CURE Scholars, Families Gain Knowledge of Dentistry

In what has become a family-oriented tradition, more than 40 middle school students were joined by parents, a few siblings, and at least one grandparent on March 2 for the UMB CURE Scholars Oral Health Promotion Program at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD).

Congratulations to:

CURE parent Latosha Gray, mother of Cohort 3 scholar Parris Green, for opening her own small business, a flower shop called Petal Pusher’s.

CURE Dream Team member Bret Hassel, PhD, for receiving the University System of Maryland Board of Regents Award for Excellence in Mentoring.

CURE Dream Team member Lauren Kareem, MEd, for the new addition to the CURE Scholars family, Nasir Kareem. Baby, mom, and family are doing well!

Erika Malone, mother of Cohort 2 scholar Emani Malone. On May 18, Malone graduated from University Maryland University College with her bachelor of science degree in psychology. Malone earned her degree while working full-time as a communications officer for the UMB Police Department and raising two incredible children, one in middle school and one studying at Frostburg State University.

CURE Dream Team member Elizabeth Parker, PhD, for co-authoring "Friends and Family: How African-American Adolescents’ Perceptions of Dietary Beliefs and Behaviors of Others Relate to Diet Quality," which was published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Parker also received an American Heart Association career development award.

CURE Advisory Board member Shannon Redd, JD, for joining Cisco as a senior advisor, U.S. Public Sector Smart Cities Solutions and Connected Justice.

CURE mentor and Dream Team member Rodney J. Taylor, MD, MSPH, FACS, for being chosen by the Student National Medical Association to give the keynote speech at its annual senior banquet.

CURE Executive Director Robin Saunders, EdD, MS, for her recent marriage to Alan Davis. Thank you to so many CURE Scholars and family members for attending the ceremony!
