UMB Rejects Hate

May 27, 2021

Dear UMB Community,

Across the United States, there has been a rise in antisemitic hate speech and actions, in person and online. I want to be very clear that the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) does not tolerate antisemitism, racism, or discrimination in any form.

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance offers a working definition of antisemitism: “Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”

As anti-Jewish hate is on the rise, it’s increasingly important that if you see — or experience — any of this unacceptable behavior, please report it. It will not be tolerated.

UMB is committed to a culture that is enriched by diversity and inclusion, in the broadest sense, in our thoughts, actions, and leadership. We want every member of the UMB community to feel welcome and safe here.

As I’ve said before, we must stand together against hate. Only then will we be able to fulfill UMB’s mission to improve the human condition and serve the public good.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS

President
