    Vacate Radioactive Materials Laboratory

    Research, Environmental Health and Safety  |  Approved May 14, 2015

    Purpose

    Vacate shared or individual radioactive materials laboratory at University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB).

    Applicability

    Primary Investigators or administrators working in authorized radioactive materials laboratory that wish to vacate that individual or shared space.

    Instructions

    Shared Radioactive Materials Laboratory

    1. Written notification should be provided to Radiation Safety Office indicating desire to vacate the room.
    2. Follow Termination of Radioactive Materials Authorization procedure with a few exceptions:
      1. If there is radioactive material belonging to the particular authorized user present in this room, the material may be transferred to another room listed on their authorization or disposed of as radioactive waste.
      2. If the remaining isotope is disposed, the corresponding yellow RUD must be returned to the Radiation Safety Office.
      3. If there is any equipment is the room belonging to the particular authorized user that is labeled with a "Caution Radioactive Materials" sign, this equipment may be transferred to another room listed on the authorization or can be checked by Radiation Safety Personnel for contamination.
      4. If there are radioactive waste containers belonging to the particular authorized user present in this room, the container may be transferred to another room listed on their authorization or disposed.  If there is radioactive waste present in the assigned room, the waste must be disposed. See Diposal of Radioactive Waste procedure.
      5. Once all radioactive material including waste belonging to the particular authorized user has been removed from the laboratory, a final contamination survey should be performed.
      6. Radiation Safety Personnel will then perform an inspection to include wipe tests and meter surveys of the laboratory and examine room to ensure that all radioactive material and waste belonging to the particular authorized user vacating the room has been removed.

    Individual Radioactive Materials Laboratory

    1. Written notification should be provided to Radiation Safety Office indicating desire to vacate the room.
    2. Follow Termination of Radioactive Materials Authorization procedure and Shared Radioactive Materials instructions above with one exception:
      1. No radioactive materials may remain in laboratory.
