    Welcome from Chief Cary

    Dear UMB Community:

Welcome back to another exciting year at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB)!

Whether you're learning in a classroom, researching in a lab, or exploring Baltimore, the UMB Police Department is here to keep you safe. I want to highlight some safety tips and resources to help ensure a great school year.

    1. Put your phone away: Walking between classes and activities may seem like an ideal time to catch up on emails or calls, but being distracted makes you and your phone an easy target. Put your phone out of sight until you arrive at your destination.
    2. Be aware of your surroundings: Stick to major streets and avoid alleys. Walk-in groups, if possible. If you feel nervous, go inside a UMB building and call for a Safe Walk or Safe Ride.
    3. Lock your valuables, vehicles, and bikes. Keep valuable items out of view by keeping them in your trunk or bringing them inside.
    4. See something, say something: Our officers work hard to keep our campus safe, but we can't be all places at once. Safety is a community effort - if you notice something dangerous, call 911.

Our Safe Ride and Safe Walk program is available any time, day or night. Call 410-706-6882 to have a police or safety escort on campus and in our surrounding community. You're never bothering us - we're here to help you get to your destination safely. To see a map of our Safe Ride and Safe Walk area, visit bit.ly/UMBmap.

There are also 31 Blue Light Phones located throughout campus. In an emergency, push the red button to speak with a UMB Police dispatcher.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to the UMB Police Department with any questions or concerns. Your safety is our top priority.

We wish you a happy and safe school year!

    Sincerely,

    Alice K. Cary, MS

    UMB Chief of Police
