    Recent Assaults Near Campus

    Dear UMB Community:

While many of you are working, researching, and studying from home, the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD) continues to provide security and safety resources to our community. We have added 30 security officers for increased visibility and, while our Safe Ride service is suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, our Safe Walk service is available on campus 24/7 by calling 410-706-6882.

For those who are coming to UMB, I want to make you aware of two crimes that happened near our campus. While no members of the UMB community were involved in either crime, it's important that we all remain vigilant to stay safe.

Early Saturday morning, an armed assault occurred in an alley near the 900 block of West Baltimore Street. The victim was approached from behind and cut on the hand. Yesterday afternoon, UMBPD and the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) again responded to the 900 block of West Baltimore Street, where an armed robbery occurred near the MTA bus stop. The suspects left with clothing and a wallet, and no one was hurt. UMBPD officers are assisting BPD with both investigations.

No one should ever be the victim of a crime. I have directed additional officers to patrol this area and provide extra security. You can also take small steps to prevent crime: always walk on well-traveled and well-lit paths; put away headphones and cellphones before walking outside; and walk in groups or call for a Safe Walk, especially when it's dark outside. If you feel unsafe, immediately go inside and call 911.

As UMBPD's interim chief of police, I will continue to keep our community informed and take strides to ensure that UMB is a safe place to live, work, and learn.

    Sincerely,

    Thomas Leone
    Interim UMB Chief of Police
