    Fall Safety Update

    Dear UMB Community:

As the days get shorter, the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD) is committed to your safety as you work, research, and study on campus. We are increasing officer patrols when employees and students are beginning their afternoon commute and during other times with high pedestrian traffic.

Even with our increased patrols, crime does occur on and near UMB's campus. Yesterday afternoon, a member of our UMB community had her purse stolen while leaving the Administration Lot at 215 Pearl St. and walking north on Pearl St. Our officers responded and canvassed the area, but were unable to find the suspects.

No person should ever be a victim of a crime. As we continue to increase and shift our patrol areas to deter crime, there are actions you can take to stay safe. Put your phone and headphones away before going outside. Be aware of your surroundings and walk along familiar, populated roads. Walk in groups, especially as it gets dark, and call 410-706-6882 to utilize our Safe Walk/Safe Ride program. This resource is available 24/7 and I strongly encourage you to use it - you are never bothering us.

Safety is a community effort. If you see something or someone that makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, call 911. Nothing is too small to report. Your safety is my top priority, and I pledge to do all I can to ensure a safe, secure UMB community.

    Sincerely,

    Alice K. Cary, MS

    UMB Chief of Police
