Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested by UMBPD
Dear UMB Community:
Yesterday, three UMB Alerts were sent campus-wide, culminating in the successful capture of an armed robbery suspect by the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD). I want to follow those alerts with additional details, as well as resources available to keep you safe.
At about 8:20 last night, UMBPD officers successfully took an armed robbery suspect into custody at Baltimore and Paca streets. This suspect was seen brandishing a knife and is believed to be responsible for three robberies at knifepoint over the previous 26 hours. No victims were physically injured during these attacks. Once the suspect was in custody, our officers worked with the Baltimore Police Department to transport the suspect to central booking, where he will face charges.
I am proud of the hard work and dedication of our UMBPD officers who were able to capture this dangerous person quickly and prevent future attacks on our campus. Our dispatchers and officers displayed a strong commitment to the safety and protection of our community. Those involved in the suspect's arrest will be honored with commendations for their exemplary service.
It is important that we all continue to be vigilant to prevent future crime on campus. UMBPD is increasing our police presence. Additional officers will be patrolling "hot spots" where we have seen an increase in crime, especially near parking lots. I have approved overtime patrols to ensure we maximize the visibility of our police officers and prevent crime across campus.
As a reminder, put your phone and other valuables away before leaving the building. When possible, walk in a group and stay on well-traveled, well-lit pathways. Be aware of your surroundings and go inside if you notice anything suspicious. If you see something, say something. Call UMBPD at 410-706-6882 if you notice a suspicious person or activity.
I also strongly urge you to use our Safe Walk/Safe Ride program by calling 410-706-6882. Our police and security officers will get you safely to your destination. The few minutes it takes for the officer to arrive is well worth the added safety and peace of mind. Our Safe Ride program also will be available beginning Nov. 18 through the UMB Mobile App, which will include scheduling a ride, tracking the driver, and more.
When a member of our community is impacted by crime, we feel the ripples throughout our campus. I am proud that UMBPD was able to bring a swift resolution to these incidents, and I will continue to take decisive action to ensure every faculty, staff, and student is safe when they come to UMB.
