Where clinical training meets real patient care

MARCH prepares the next generation of advanced practice clinician students and medical residents to deliver patient-centered reproductive health and abortion care.

Learn the foundations

Coursework covers the fundamentals of abortion care, including patient counseling, contraception, and medication and procedural abortion.

Build clinical skills

Hands-on training develops skills for safe, effective abortion care.

Gain real clinical experience

At Maryland Clinical Abortion Training Network (MCATN) sites, learners train with experienced clinical teams to provide patient-centered care.

Program Overview

This training is for:

Advanced practice clinician students

Through the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s  MARCH - Advanced Family Planning and Abortion Care, students complete comprehensive training in reproductive health and abortion care that combines online learning, skills-building sessions, and 80 hours of supervised clinical training at an MCATN site.

The course focuses on medication abortion, ultrasound, and contraception, while introducing procedural abortion care through structured didactic and clinical experiences that support progressive skill development.

This course is open to Advanced Practice Clinician students at other University of System Maryland (USM) institutions through inter-institutional enrollment. If you are an APC student at another USM institution and are interested in inter-institutional enrollment, please see the application process below.

Medical residents

Residents complete an in-depth reproductive health and abortion-focused curriculum before participating in MCATN clinical training.

Training in procedural abortion care is designed to build skills and confidence through graduated clinical experience, supporting progression toward independent performance. Expectations and levels of participation vary according to each resident’s stage of training and demonstrated clinical proficiency.

Application Process

Eligible students (see above) follow their program’s standard elective selection process.

If you are a USM student outside of UMB and your program allows elective selection, contact the UMB MARCH Program to coordinate the inter-institutional process with your home institution.

If you are a student or resident at a non-USM institution interested in training opportunities, contact the UMB MARCH Program to learn more about other training opportunities.
