How Does an Instructional Designer work? - The Process
A subject matter expert (SME) or course writer collaborates with an instructional designer through these four phases to develop effective learning experiences.
Kick-off
A kick-off meeting is held to define the project scope, establish collaboration methods, and align expectations. A written project schedule helps keep everyone on track with key milestones and deadlines.
Design
- The instructional designer reviews content to ensure clarity and logical flow between topics.
- Mock-ups or prototypes are created for the SME’s approval before full development begins.
Development
Two to three major versions are shared with the SME for review and feedback as the course takes shape.
Finalization
- The SME and stakeholders review the final product and provide approval.
- Final refinements are made, such as adding closed captioning and uploading the course to the Learning Management System (LMS).
- Project files are handed over to the SME for future updates and repurposing.
