Letters from the Chief to the Community

Fall Safety Reminder

Dear UMB Community:

Two weeks ago, I sent an email with back-to-school safety tips. I hope you took a few moments to read it. While many University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) community members continue to work and study from home, I am committed to the safety of those who remain on our physical campus.

With that in mind, I want to let you know about an assault that happened on our campus early this morning. A member of our community was pushed from behind while walking to their car about 2:30 a.m. A person nearby noticed the incident and yelled, and the suspect ran. No one was injured and no weapons were used.

I never want anyone to feel unsafe at UMB. If you are walking on campus late at night, please call for a Safe Walk; it's available 24/7 by calling 410-706-6882 (6-6882 from a campus phone). Let us help you get to your destination safely.

Safety is a community effort. This morning, a bystander saw something and shouted. While the UMB Police Department has increased patrols of our police and security officers, we can't be all places at once. Call us anytime - day or night - at 410-706-6882. And in an emergency, always call 911!

September is National Campus Safety Awareness Month. We're posting safety tips, departmental information, and resources on our social media channels all month. Please be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram: @PoliceUMB.

Stay safe!

Thomas Leone
UMB Interim Chief of Police
