The Power of Brand Consistency at UMB

Every communication tells the UMB story. A strong brand is more than a logo or visual identity. By presenting a consistent brand, we build trust, strengthen our reputation, and maximize the impact of our message.

This branding hub provides the tools, guidelines, and support you need to create on-brand communications. Our Brand Manager is here to help ensure every piece reflects the quality and identity of our University.

What is Branding?

When you say “brand,” you most immediately think about logos, colors, or fonts. But a brand of a university is much more — it’s an entire structure, the images, messaging, and way of thinking of the university community. It’s about style and consistency. Brand consistency among all schools and teams at UMB ensures a solid image and solidifies name recognition to our community.

UMB’s brand represents the entire University, not just an individual school, department, or project. As a state institution with a national reputation, every communication contributes to how UMB is understood and perceived.

Consistent branding helps protect the University’s reputation, reduce confusion, and reinforce the trust our audiences place in UMB. It also supports the transparency, accountability, and professionalism expected of a public institution.

Areas of the Brand

Brand Approvals

Some uses of the UMB brand require approval before they are published or produced.

  • Get logo approval. OCPA must approve all uses of UMB and school logos before a project is printed, published, or produced.
  • Get approval for endorsements. Do not use the UMB name or brand in testimonials or endorsements without prior approval from the UMB president or designee. Approval is generally not granted for commercial goods or services, except in exceptional circumstances.
  • Use logos as provided. An ampersand (&) may not be used in any UMB logo or logo text lockup.
  • Do not create your own logo. Departments, centers, and institutes may not create their own logos. Official logos may be created only by OCPA or approved communications departments.
  • Submit proofs. Send PDF proofs for approval to branding@umaryland.edu.

What Our Brand Represents
