Research Activity

Research activity at UMB reflects the scope, impact, and growth of externally funded projects led by faculty and staff. Extramural funding, including grants and contracts from federal agencies, foundations, and other sponsors, supports innovation, discovery, and public service across disciplines.

Explore research funding trends, proposal activity, and faculty participation over time to better understand the University’s research productivity, competitiveness, and areas of strength.

Extramural Funding Overview

The University System of Maryland (USM) Report on Extramural Funding tracks annual research awards and proposal activity.

Key measures include:

  • Grants and Contracts: Total funding awarded from external sponsors
  • Unduplicated Funding Totals: Adjusted totals that exclude inter-institutional overlap within the system
  • Number of Awards and Proposals: Indicators of research activity and competitiveness
  • Faculty Participation: Number of faculty receiving awards or submitting proposals
