UMB maintains a group of peer institutions to benchmark academic programs and inform state funding and performance comparisons. Because UMB’s mix of professional schools is unique among public academic health centers, peer institutions are selected based on comparable program offerings across key disciplines.
Peer groups have evolved over time. In 1999, five public institutions were selected as peers for funding and performance comparisons, with three additional universities added for law school benchmarking. In 2014, the Maryland Higher Education Commission designated 21 public institutions as peers for state funding comparisons, and in 2015 UMB selected 10 of these institutions as performance peers for more focused benchmarking.
