Academic Program Assessment and Improvement (APAIR)

APAIR is UMB's centralized system for documenting and reporting student learning assessment across academic programs.

Through APAIR, schools and programs can track learning outcomes, record assessment results, and document improvements over time in a consistent, accessible format. This helps ensure that assessment is more consistent, transparent, and useful.

Access APAIR

APAIR is available through the UMB Portal using single sign-on (SSO), so it can be accessed as part of your regular workflow.

  • Access APAIR via the UMB Portal
  • Dual-factor authentication is required

APAIR is organized into four core modules that guide program assessment and reporting:

Program Details – Maintain current information about your program, including leadership, structure, and affiliations. Ensures accurate institutional reporting.

Annual Program Plan – Define program goals and areas for improvement each year. Goals may focus on student learning, program performance, or operational priorities.

Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs) – Document how your program supports and advances UMB’s Institutional Learning Outcomes, including progress across key thematic areas.

External Program Review – Record accreditation status, review outcomes, and supporting documentation to maintain a complete program history.

Together, these modules provide a structured framework for planning, documenting, and improving program outcomes.

Understand the yearly cycle for updating and submitting APAIR reports.

Each year, programs use APAIR to:

  1. Update program information
  2. Establish or revise goals
  3. Document progress and outcomes
  4. Submit reports for review and approval

This cycle supports continuous program improvement while maintaining compliance with institutional reporting requirements.

APAIR access is role-based to support collaboration while ensuring appropriate review and approval:

  • Approver – Enter, edit, and approve program information and assessment reports
  • Contributor – Enter and edit content but cannot approve submissions
  • View Only – View program information and reports

Access guides, frameworks, and training materials to support APAIR use.

  • Reporting Guidance: Templates, annual updates, and best practices
  • Institutional Learning Outcomes: Framework and definitions
  • Training Materials: Recorded sessions and presentations (available upon request)
