The University of Maryland School of Medicine through its Institute for Human Virology and Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health has taken a national lead in extending the work of our university beyond national borders. It's a global leader in vaccine development, disease surveillance, and reducing child mortality rates, based on more than 40 years of research and service. CVD has extensive expertise monitoring HIV/AIDS, including conducting the largest-ever in-country study of HIV, and was the first research institute in the United States to link basic science, population studies, and clinical trials to develop new vaccines and treatments for HIV. CVD was also the first global center to test, develop, and license vaccines for critical emerging diseases such as Ebola, Zika, cholera, and typhoid.
