People and Place-Based Learning Rooted in Baltimore’s Heritage
The Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (OEDI) is pleased to offer Baltimore Heritage-Based Tours for Teaching and Learning. The Baltimore Heritage-Based Tour for Teaching and Learning is designed to deepen our understanding of the city's historical landmarks and the communities that shape its vibrant history and as an opportunity for the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) to deepen its connection and engagement with the local community.
This tour is designed for faculty in academic health, law, and social work and aims to connect historical knowledge with the broader educational experience, providing valuable insights for integrating people and place-based pedagogy into teaching, learning, and curriculum development.
The Baltimore Heritage Based Tour for Teaching and Learning is led by Baltimore native artists and historians. The experience aims to explore innovative ways to enrich teaching with equity-focused, community-engaged, and historically grounded perspectives and to advance UMB’s mission to improve the human condition and serve the public good.
What to Expect
- A 2-hour tour that begins and ends at Lexington Market with rest breaks throughout the tour.
- Insight into Baltimore’s heritage through art, historical figures, and personal narratives, and its connection to UMB and the people and communities that we are a part of.
