Insurance Changes Coming Soon for COVID-19 Tests

Starting May 11, 2023, private insurers and Medicare Advantage plans will no longer be required to cover the cost of free at-home COVID-19 tests. (Note: Medicaid will cover at-home tests at no cost through September 2024.) This will also impact students enrolled in the UMB Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) managed by Gallagher and United Healthcare Student Resources (UHCSR). Read more.

State Center Vaccination, Testing and Treatment Site to close Saturday, February 25

The State Center Vaccination, Testing, and Treatment Site, located at 300 W. Preston Street in Baltimore, will close on Saturday, February 25, drawing to a close more than 16 months of offering Marylanders of all ages free COVID vaccinations and boosters, on-site Test to Treat services, and at-home tests and KN95 masks. Letter: Employee COVID-19 Vaccination Protocol Update

Effective Aug. 1, 2022, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) will no longer require employees (faculty, staff, and contractors) to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination. As of June 1, callers will reach a recording directing them to report their problem and obtain guidance about isolation, quarantine, return to campus, and testing from the UMB COVID-19 report form at umaryland.edu/reportcovid. You can read the details of each scenario in the COVID-19 Isolation/Quarantine Protocols, but the bottom line is this: Getting your booster shot has tremendous benefits for protection. If you are boosted, you won’t have to quarantine even if you have had a close contact exposure, as long as you remain without symptoms and continue to test negative using the recommended schedule of tests for your situation. The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) COVID-19 Hotline has a new tool to help provide immediate guidance on COVID-19 positive tests, symptoms, and high-risk exposures to others infected with the virus. The COVID-19 Report Form is a way for any UMB student, faculty or staff member, or Faculty Physicians, Inc. (FPI) employee to self-submit this information in lieu of calling the hotline. Read more.

Faculty Leave Carry Over Exemption

I’m pleased to share that the University System of Maryland has passed a temporary exception for faculty with 12-month contracts to carry over 480 hours of annual leave into 2022. This is an update to what was shared by President Jarrell in October. The carryover leave should be used by Dec. 31, 2022, and these hours are not available for payout. Read more.

If I’ve already had COVID-19 and recovered, do I still need to get vaccinated?

Getting vaccinated is a safer way of building protection against COVID than getting infected. So, yes, you should be vaccinated regardless of whether you’ve already had COVID. Experts don’t yet know how long you’re protected from getting sick again after recovery, and it’s possible—though rare—that you could be infected again with the virus that causes COVID-19. University System Publishes Terms of Carryover Leave Exception
