The Office of Inclusive Excellence and Institutional Effectiveness (IEIE) strengthens UMB’s mission and values by leading organizational learning, capacity building, and evidence-based practices that expand access and opportunity, foster belonging, and support a pluralistic environment where all members of the UMB community can thrive.

We connect University goals to the structures, processes, and evidence that drive meaningful progress and sustain impact.

Our Pillars

We work alongside faculty, staff, and students to integrate equity and inclusion into the academic and professional life of the university — in the classroom, in research, and in how we serve our communities.

Strategy:

Promote evidence-informed academic and administrative practices-including high-impact pedagogy, community-engaged scholarship, culturally responsive clinical and legal service, and research that addresses health, legal, and social disparities-advancing excellence and equity in all facets of UMB's work.

We provide the evidence that informs strategic decisions, tracks institutional progress, and holds UMB accountable to its stated goals. Good data, clearly communicated, is how this university knows where it stands and where it needs to go.

Strategy:

Integrate institutional effectiveness and inclusive excellence through campus wide planning and assessment processes that center students, faculty, and staff, support high quality decision making, ensure operational clarity, and advance continuous progress while attending to institutional risk and upholding institutional values.

We build the internal relationships and shared infrastructure that allow schools, units, and offices across UMB to work toward common goals. Effective change at a complex institution requires coordination, trust, and the tools to sustain progress over time.

Strategy:

Cultivate strong, trust-based partnerships with schools and administrative units to strengthen evidence-informed practices, expand access to usable insights, and ensure consistent alignment in messaging, planning, and implementation across UMB.

We support the conditions that allow every member of the UMB community to contribute fully — through intentional programming, structured dialogue, and a sustained commitment to affirming the identities and experiences each person brings to this institution.

Strategy:

Foster a pluralistic environment where all students, faculty, and staff feel supported and valued.  The office strengthens UMB's core values through inclusive communications, structure and deliberate dialogue across perspectives, and initiatives that promote psychological safety.

How We Work

Our approach is grounded in the ABCD's of Inclusive Excellence. This framework shapes how we pursue our mission across all four pillars.

A — Affirming Identity: involves recognizing and valuing each individual's unique cultural, social, and personal identities.

B — Building Community: focuses on creating a sense of connectedness and shared purpose among all members of an organization.

C — Cultivating Leadership: developing and empowering individuals to lead in ways that prepare them to be successful in a pluralistic, global and interconnected world.

D — Deliberate Dialogue: refers to intentional, structured conversations aimed at understanding diverse perspectives and fostering mutual respect.

When practiced together, these principles generate enthusiasm for inclusive excellence work, communicate our goals clearly to a broader audience, and build the broad coalition of supporters that lasting institutional change requires.

Evidence, Transparency, and Accountability

To ensure transparency and institutional accountability, IEIE supports the University’s formal reporting and accreditation responsibilities. This work connects institutional data, assessment, and equity efforts to the required disclosures and external standards that demonstrate UMB’s performance and integrity. Additionally, we produce official reports to external agencies for transparent consumer decision-making.

Moving UMB Forward

IEIE serves as a bridge between strategy and practice, linking planning, assessment, accreditation, and equity work into a coherent institutional approach. By aligning data, governance, and strategic partnerships, the office helps ensure that UMB’s commitment to improving the human condition is reflected in measurable outcomes, informed decisions, and meaningful opportunities for all.
